Classic Christian Science Introduction

Getting Started with Basic Healing - The Language of the Comforter

Languages have a set of rules for reading and writing. So it is in learning the language of the Comforter. Below are Seven Synonym that Mrs. Eddy used for God. You will find these word Capitalized in S&H because the words are being used as other names for God:

Note:  As you read, notice how Mrs. Eddy put these synonyms in a sentence. Like for example she will say “Truth, Life, and Love...”. Later in a sentence she will use Love, Truth, and Life...” to make a point.

An extended metaphor wherein a story illustrates an important attribute of the subject

Opposites or contrast

An inherent characteristics meaning having a specific cause or origin.

A term or phrase applied to something to which it si not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance like  “A mighty fortress is our God.”

An extended metaphor narrated as an anecdote illustrating and teaching a moral lesson.

Extending in the same direction - comparable

Likeness or visible image. Comparing two unlike things or an imaginative comparison.

- are other words meaning the same thing like other words for “attribute” are quality, character, feature trait or virtue. “Essence” means fundamental nature or quality.

Synonym for “essence” is being or nature.

“Those, who are willing to leave their nets or to cast them on the right side for Truth, have the opportunity now, as aforetime, to learn and to practice Christian healing. The Scriptures contain it. The spiritual import of the Word imparts this power.

S&H 271:16-30

“The thunder of Sinai and the Sermon on the Mount are pursuing and will overtake the ages, rebuking in their course all error and proclaiming the kingdom of heaven on earth. Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practiced.” S&H 174:17

We Knew Mary Baker Eddy Series

Christ and Christmas
By Mary Baker Eddy

Through out this web site I will be referring to the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy as “S&H” or “Science and Health” and the King James Bible as “The Bible”.

Also Mary Baker Eddy will be not be written out but referred to as MBE.

When using the term “man” it means both men and women.

The Comforter, the Final Revelation

“God is a spirit, therefore the language of Spirit must be, and is, spiritual. Christian Science attaches no physical nature and significance to the Supreme Being or His manifestation; mortals alone do this. God’s essential language is spoken of in the last chapter of Mark’s Gospel as the new tongue, the spiritual meaning of which is attained through “signs following.” S&H 117:6

John’s Gospel talks about the language of Spirit this way, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The author of the book of Hebrews states it this way, “worlds were framed by the word of God...”

Do you desire to know God more and discover what your relationship is to him? God dearly loves you and wants you to know him. It doesn’t matter where you are in your life, whether you are looking for healing of any kind - physical, mental or spiritual. Healing is understanding what God is and your relationship to him. In a nut shell, understanding God results in healing. And yes in physical healing too. Where does understanding take place first? Where does a thought begin but in your thinking.  So where does God come to you but in your thinking. These thoughts are the angels that you need to take charge of and make your own.

Christian Science is the Science of the Christ - the Comforter which God sent. This Bible based Science teaches you how to take responsibility for your thinking. When you take responsibility for your thinking you will live the life that God wants for you. God will lead you in the way. God sent his son Christ Jesus to show the way. Christ Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Christ Jesus showed us how to heal in the Bible and Mrs. Eddy explained how Jesus healed through her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Christian Science is often mistaken for Scientology. These two religions are not the same and are not related. Christian Science is not secular nor is it faith healing. Christian Science is sacred. Christian Science is sacred in that healing was what Christ Jesus was teaching by his life.  Mrs. Eddy discovered and explained how Jesus healed. Mrs. Eddy was chosen by God to reveal Christian Science. Christian Science is the “Comforter” that is the prophecy spoken by Christ Jesus, the full and final revelation, the language of Spirit. The year Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science is the year 1866 that coincides with the prophecy in the Bible in the book Daniel which dates the year of 1866.

Mrs. Eddy says “In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and named my discovery Christian Science. God had been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing.” (S&H 107:1)

In the New Testament in the Bible in the book of John 14:15-31 and John 16: 7 Jesus speaks of the “comforter”. That he must leave so that comforter will come. S&H 55: 27 Mrs. Eddy speaks of this divine comforter to be Christian Science. And that “… Jesus demonstrated the Christ; he proved that Christ is the divine idea of God - the Holy Ghost, or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle, Love, and leading into all truth.” (S&H 332:19)

Mrs. Eddy Called like Samuel in the Bible

To give you a little history about Mrs. Eddy, you can find her autobiography, Retrospection and Introspection (Ret or Retro and Intro) in your local Christian Science Reading Room. Retro and Intro can be purchased individually as a small pamphlet or it is part of the book Prose Works. I suggest buying Prose Work which are the other complete writings of Mrs. Eddy since I will be referring to other books Mrs. Eddy has written.  Mrs. Eddy was called by God at a young age as Samuel in the Bible was called. As a child she loved to read her Bible and heal her animals. Her mother was a very spiritual woman and she even new that before Mary was born she was carrying a special child. So when her daughter heard her name called several times her mother told her to answer as Samuel did.  Mrs. Eddy says this in Retrospection and Introspection that her mother told her to answer the call as Samuel did and so “That night, before going to rest, my mother read to me the Scriptural narrative of little Samuel, and bade me, when the voice called again, to reply as he did, "Speak, Lord; for Thy servant heareth." (Ret. 9:8)

Then in 1866 Mrs. Eddy fell on the ice not expecting to live through the night. She called for her Bible where she read the story of the paralytic man and got a glimpse of how Christ Jesus healed. She was healed, got up and walked down the stairs to the astonishment of the people planning her funeral. After this healing, she couldn’t leave it to a fluke. She began writing Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. It took her three years to write. She did not discuss the book she was writing but she went out and healed through inspiration of God. She was proving that God does heal by what we call “demonstration”. This discovery of Christian Science in 1866 also coincides with the prophecy in Daniel. More about the Daniel Dates in the Bible on the Questions and Answer page. Mrs. Eddy was fulfilling prophecy.

The Great Revelation

In her autobiography Retrospection and Introspection Mrs. Eddy says in her own words in the chapter “The Great Revelation”, Christian Science reveals Mind, the only living and true God, and all that is made by Him, Mind, as harmonious, immortal, and spiritual: the five material senses define Mind and matter as distinct, but mutually dependent, each on the other, for intelligence and existence. Science defines man as immortal, as coexistent and coeternal with God, as made in His own image and likeness; material sense defines life as something apart from God, beginning and ending, and man as very far from the divine likeness. Science reveals Life as a complete sphere, as eternal, self‐existent Mind; material sense defines life as a broken sphere, as organized matter, and mind as something separate from God. Science reveals Spirit as All, averring that there is nothing beside God; material sense says that matter, His antipode, is something besides God. Material sense adds that the divine Spirit created matter, and that matter and evil are as real as Spirit and good.” (Ret. 59:18)

“Christian Science is the only sure basis of harmony. Material sense contradicts Science, for matter and its so-called organizations take no cognizance of the spiritual facts of the universe, or of the real man and God. Christian Science declares that there is but one Truth, Life, Love, but one Spirit, Mind, Soul. Any attempt to divide these arises from the fallibility of sense, from mortal man's ignorance, from enmity to God and divine Science.” (Ret. 60:11- 61:2)

How do I know this is the Truth?

You will know by your heart burning within as in the Bible story ‘Walk to Emmaus”  ( Read the story in the Bible Luke 24:13-35). Mrs. Eddy states “In the Walk to Emmaus, Jesus was known to his friends by the words, which made their hearts burn within them, and by the breaking of bread.” (S&H 46:5) As you read Science and Health you are bringing out this Truth in consciousness which will inspire, enlighten, and transform. A Practitioner put it this way, “To be inspired simply means to be aware of the reality of God’s presence as the only presence, the reality of His power as the only power, and the reality of our individual being as the expression of God’s being. That reality constitutes the Word of God which heals.”

Learning to heal is learning what Love is. What God is.

Jesus was known to his friends by the “words.” Aren’t “words” part of a language. In  other words, do you want to understand divine Love the language of Spirit to heal yourself? “God is Love” as stated in the Bible. So as God’s child you are Love. Sometimes just a thought, one Truth, in the face of evil will dissipate the evil (Instantaneous healing). Evil can be defined as lies like hatred, envy, disease, sin, etc. We know that outcome of understanding God and the rules is healing because when you stick to the Principle of God and live according to his rules you will witness healing. Everyone of us are always in the middle of a healing and not in the middle of problem. It is turning to God and recognizing that peace and Love are right there where the problem seems to be. Emma Shipman, an eyewitness student of Mrs. Eddy’s gives this account from a class taught by Mrs. Eddy. Miss Shipman writes:

“After [Mrs. Eddy] had talked about the great need of love in everything we do, a pupil asked, ‘Do you mean love of person?’  Mrs. Eddy replied, in substance, No, I mean love of good. then she was asked, ‘How shall we know whether our love is personal or impersonal?’ Her reply, in substance, was, When your love requires an object to call it forth, you will know it is personal; when it flows out freely to all, you will know it is impersonal” (We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, first series, p. 84).

Healing Is Between You and God

Healing is between you and God and no one else unless you choose to call a Christian Science practitioner. Stay in the closet until you have demonstrated God’s allness. (Matthew 6:6) Do not gossip, brag or complain that you have a problem. It makes the problem more real. Diagnosis will make the problem more real. Mrs. Eddy states, “A physical diagnosis of disease – since mortal mind must be the cause of disease – tends to induce disease.”  So prayer and your desire to know God will result in healing. Understanding God is healing

What do I need to get started healing? – Read this complete web site first.

Christ always asked the person who wanted to be healed to do something. Check out this Partial List of Healings in Scripture.pdf in the Old and New Testament in the King James Bible. As you read the Bible look for the healings and add to the list. The leper was asked to go wash himself in the river Siloam. Christ Jesus gave thanks to God before he fed the five thousand. So Read this complete web site. Also you will need to purchase the textbook Science and Health with Key to the Scripture by Mary Baker Eddy. Many people have been healed just by reading the Christian Science textbook. You can verify this by reading the last chapter of the book where there are testimonies of people who have been healed of many diseases beginning on page 600. Listen to God. Prayer should lead to practical application. There is no mixing of the medical with the metaphysical.

No Formulas in Healing

There are no formulas in healing. To heal is being “Prayed up” by studying the Lesson Sermon daily, doing daily identification work and listening to God - inspiration. No medicine or medical diagnosis is needed. Keeping thought on God - listening for inspiration. Identifying yourself as “good” which is in Genesis 1. Use the definition of “God” on page 587. Christ Jesus always prayed everywhere - in the desert, up on a mountain or on a lake going to the Father first. Mrs. Eddy went to the Father first. She healed as Christ Jesus healed. In the Christian Science Manual Mrs. Eddy states, “No member shall use written formulas, nor permit his patients or pupils to use them, as auxiliaries to teaching Christian Science or for healing the sick.” Christ Jesus said it this way in the Sermon on the Mount, “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.” (Matthew 6:7)

In the Bible the word “grace” is used. This word  from the Greek  means “Divine influence upon the heart, and the reflection in life”. You are the reflection of God, a good and gracious God. Sometimes you will heal instantaneously and in other cases you will need to heal by “argument”. You heal by argument using the Truths from Science and Health and the Bible.

No Group Discussions

Mrs. Eddy did not heal through group discussions or teach people how to tolerate/cope with situations, she healed. By group discussion I mean out in the material world there is a group/support for every known disease or book group who discuss but don’t heal. These groups teach you to cope or tolerate but not heal. Who has the the final say about what you think and do? You and God! I’m not saying Bible Study is not good. Bible study is a rich resource if you do not let denominationalism into the study. Christian Science is a movement. So in healing there must be some kind of movement. Movement off of thought so that the problem does not exist. Movement should be practical and joyous.

The Language of Spirit - Christian Science - From Reason to Revelation

As in all languages there are “Figures of Speech” so it is with the language of the Comforter or the language of Spirit.  Look up each of these words in the dictionary -   Allegory, Definitions, Synonyms, Metaphors, Similes, Symbols and Parables. All these are used in some way in the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (S&H) by M.B.E. so that they help in making a point clear in showing you the rules in which to to heal. Look for these in the Bible Parables. Here’s a list of JESUS PARABLES.pdf. Christ Jesus and Mrs. Eddy teach a way of hearing, and seeing the Spiritual with the language of Spirit.

Richard Lanham, in his book A Handlist of Rhetorical Terms, “The vast pool of terms for verbal ornamentation has acted like a gene pool for the rhetorical imagination, stimulating us to look at language in another way. . . . The figures have worked historically to teach a way of seeing."
(Richard Lanham, A Handlist of Rhetorical Terms, Univ. of California Press, 1991)

  1. 1.“In the whole world of literature, both ancient and modern, figures of speech occupy a foremost place. The Sacred Scriptures abound in them, because the Hebrew mind delighted in Oriental imagery. Nowhere can be found such an immense number of figures so effectively presented. Antithesis and parallel embrace all the poetry and no little of the  prose of both the Old and New Testament. A place only less prominent is held by figures

in the literature of Greece and Rome. The most famous passages of poetry--epic, lyric,

and dramatic--the noblest strains of eloquence, the most vivid descriptions, all exhibit

their presence and effective force. Not the least sign of their power may be perceived in

the common language of every-day life.”

Christian Science is the Science of the Christ in the language of the Comforter, God defined as Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, Mind, Soul and Principle. Understanding God is getting right with God first. In the language of the Comforter, God teaches us what to say “yes” to and what to say “no” to.  In any science you have to start with the basics like definitions. So let’s get started about who you are.

Definition of God - “God is Love” I John 4:8 - Read the S&H Glossary page 579
Mrs. Eddy gives us more on the definition of God in the Glossary in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures “the great I AM; the all knowing, the all seeing, all acting, all wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love: all substance;

Intelligence.”  (S&H 587:5)  Did you know these are your qualities as image? Apply these to yourself. Live these qualities. Read Genesis 1 in the Bible. This is your history. “And God saw everything that he had made and, behold, it was very good.”(Gen. 1:31) Christian Science is base upon Genesis 1.

In the Bible, God is always telling what is right and what wrong. You have the divine right to look at yourself as good. Genesis two (Gen. 2) is an allegory/story explaining what isn’t true about man and woman. - the mortal and immortal - Adam and Eve. It’s based upon an oriental myth. Look this up in a Bible Dictionary or Bible Commentary. Genesis 2 is the antithesis or opposite of what you are. Allegories are stories that make a point.

Throughout the Bible there are metaphors to help you see God more clearly.

Mrs. Eddy says, “Metaphors abound in the Bible, and names are often expressive of spiritual ideas.” (S&H 320:4) A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A mighty fortress is our God”.

An example of a “similitude” from the Bible would be “…by their fruits ye shall know them or in Genesis it says to “bear fruit.” The word “ means to bear actual fruit or render a result. The word “fruit” is that something has appeared or something has changed.

An example of a symbol would be the snake in Genesis 2 which is a symbol for evil in all it’s subtleness. Wheat is a symbol of abundance and goodness.

Jesus taught using parable or stories to make a point. Mrs. Eddy states “Ear hath not heard, nor hath lips spoken, the pure language of Spirit. Our Master taught spirituality by similitudes and parables. As a divine student he unfolded God to man, illustrating and demonstrating Life and Truth in himself and by his power over the sick and sinning.” (S&H 117:14)

These different parts of speech help you to go from reason to revelation. The dream of error must yield to reason and revelation. Reason and revelation do not yield to a dream.  In the language of the Spirit “error” is another word for evil, more specifically fear discouragement, worry, hate, age, and etc. “The Dream” is referring to the “Adam and Eve” story in the Genesis 2. Understand that Genesis 2 is not your history. Don’t live it. Don’t believe that you are a mortal that must till the ground as Adam was told he must do.  You are image. God’s image.

Too Hard to Understand?

I just love old Christian Science books because in the front or back sometimes there will be a precious inspiring quote that some one has wrote down from a lecturer or teacher of Christian Science. In one old book this quote was transcribed from a lecture given by Christians Science Practitioner, Lecturer and Teacher Geith Plimmer. The quote reads, “As one would expect, scientific Christianity has a textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. Don’t read it to fight it. Read it with the thought that if there is any good in it for you, you will see it. There will be lots that you don’t understand at first, but don’t let that upset you. Just accept the little things that you can understand and agree with, and be grateful for them. The difficult things will explain themselves later.”

If Science & Health seems hard to understand, you may need to study your Bible more because just about every statement or every other statement in Science and Health is using some verse or portion of verse from the King James version of the Bible. There are over a thousand Bible verses from the Kings James Bible.  These verses  are listed in the book The Complete Concordance to the Writings of Mary Baker Eddy and it is also on a CD. Also if you don’t understand something, think it through and look up words. The most important thing is to listen to God and let God lead your study, prayer and life.

Remember what Mrs. Eddy said in S&H 319:21 “The divine Science taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs inspiration to be understood.”

To be inspired means that you are aware and in God’s presence now. Your reality as God’s individual being is here and now. You know his presence and power now as the expression of God’s being. God is talking to you and that is inspiration.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is not a book that is read once. It is a textbook that takes study and prayer to understand. God wants you to know him. The more you understand God the more you understand yourself as God’s image and likeness. The more you understand his deep impersonal spiritual love for you as his child - the “agape” love. The Greek word “agape” used by Christ Jesus is found in the book of John and implies a love far above the personal sense of love - above what the mortal senses comprehend.

Through careful study of the Bible and through reason and revelation, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, clearly discerned the nature of God, and defining His nature she uses the seven synonym. These terms can be found in the Glossary of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures on page 587: 5. She capitalized seven synonyms or seven other names for God and those are Love, Life, Truth, Principle, Mind, Soul. Remember this in reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Look for these synonyms in the Bible. God also has many attributes but we’ll talk about those later. Understand that these words are what you are. Your “understanding” of these words will lead to healing. Look the words up in the dictionary. Think and pray about them. All the terms are interchangeable in your understanding God. They are indicated in the Bible, and through the Christian Science textbook, which is the key to the Scriptures, their full meaning is revealed. They hold the answer to all human needs.

“Evidence drawn from the five physical senses relates solely to human reason; and because of opacity to the true light, human reason dimly reflects and feebly transmits Jesus ‘ works and words. Truth is a revelation.” S&H 117:24

Pray, Ponder, Understand, Act. Prayer should always lead to practical action. “Be” every action Love. Be the change you want to see.

Where did evil come from?

Read in the Bible Genesis 2, which is the Adam and Eve story or allegory. In this allegory, evil is explained by the subtleness of the snake. By the way, there is no known talking snake in the animal kingdom. So this is symbolism for the sneaky, subtleness of evil thoughts that can make you think the evil thoughts are your thoughts. In Christian Science evil thoughts are also called ”error” or “lie”. So a change in thought from evil thinking to God based thinking comes first in healing although the physical senses may still saying something different. Be aware of the influences of Internet, TV, Radio, and music on your thinking. In other words, ask yourself, “who or what is influencing my life?” Is it God and his goodness or is it matter like drugs, sex, or some other kind of matter based influence.

Mrs. Eddy says this about evil. Note the Bible verse and Bible terminology she uses within her statement.  “Let this age, which sits in judgment on Christian Science, sanction only such methods as are demonstrable in Truth and known by their fruit, and classify all others as did St. Paul in his great epistle to the Galatians, when he wrote as follows: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." (S&H 106:15-29) Read the Bible verse for yourself - Galatians 5:20, 21.

What about healing of disease?

Mrs. Eddy says this, “The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin. Disease is always induced by a false sense mentally entertained, not destroyed. Disease is an image of thought externalized. The mental state is called a material state. Whatever is cherished in mortal mind as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body.” (S&H 411:20)  Again search your thinking and then don’t dwell on disease or put claims of disease on anyone else. Keep God in your thinking. Use the Seven Synonyms and apply them to yourself as image.

The Standard of Divine Perfection

“The divine standard of perfection” is in the margin in S&H(470:13). The standard of divine perfection is established in Genesis 1. The paragraph opposite reads “Divine Science explains the abstract statement that there is one Mind by the following self-evident proposition: If God, or good, is real, then evil, the unlikeness of God, is unreal. And evil can only seem to be real by giving reality to the unreal. The children of God have but one Mind. How can good lapse into evil, when God the Mind of man never sins? The standard of perfection was originally God and man. Has God taken down His own standard, and has man fallen?

God is the creator of man, and the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man remains perfect. Man is the expression of God’s being. If there ever was a moment when man did not express the divine perfection, then there was a moment when man did not express God, and consequently a time when Deity was expressed – that is, without entity. If man has lost perfection, then he has lost his perfect Principle, the divine Mind. If man ever exited without this perfect Principle or Mind, then man’s existence was a myth.” (S&H 470: 11)

God Is The Only Law Giver

Since God is the only lawgiver, there is no one that can make a law for you except God. Just what are these laws? In Exodus 20 are the Ten Commandments and in Psalms 37:31, it says that “the laws are written in our hearts”. Luke says, “The Kingdom of God is within you.”( Luke 17:21) Because the Bible says that these laws are written in our hearts it is up to each of us to live these Ten Commandments because the kingdom of God is within us. God annuls the material laws by the spiritual law. So we know that the laws of the Kingdom of Heaven are the Ten Commandments. What does it mean to live the Ten Commandment? It doesn’t mean you can pick and choose what you live. If you break one commandment, you have broken all of them. Mrs. Eddy’s favorite Commandment is the First Commandment “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”  On page 340:15 in Science & Health Mrs. Eddy says, “It demonstrates Christian Science”.

“It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in ever hour, divine Love supplies all good.” (S&H 494:11)

Mrs. Eddy says about Christ Jesus, “We have the gospel, however, and our Master annulled the material law by healing contrary to it. We propose to follow the Master’s example. We should subordinate material law to spiritual law. Two essential points of Christian Science are, that neither Life nor man dies, and that God is not the author of sickness.” S&H 349:8

Christian Science is a science and a scientific language that is Bible based. The Science of the Christ uses terminology and symbolism to make clear the spiritual ideas or rules. A science means you can demonstrate it’s rules. We’ll talk more about rules later. A lot of the terminology and symbolism comes from The King James Bible. Be sure to have a good Bible Dictionary on hand to look up terms and symbolism. If you don’t have a good Bible Dictionary check out the web page on this site “Building Your Own Bible Library” for books you may want to add to your library. The Glossary starting on page 579 in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy gives you Spiritual definitions of terms and symbols used.

Mrs. Eddy points out “The chief difficulty in conveying the teachings of divine Science accurately to human thought lies in this, that like all other languages, English is inadequate to the expression of spiritual conceptions and propositions, because one is obliged to use material terms in dealing with the spiritual ideas. The elucidations of Christian Science lies in its spiritual sense, and this sense must be gained by its disciples in order to grasp the meaning of this Science. Out of this condition grew the prophecy concerning the Christian apostles, “They shall speak with new tongues.”

Christian Science Terms

So far I have given you Christian Science terms or definitions. Christian Science is the only religion that has given a definition or term(s) for God. Through out Mrs. Eddy’s writings she will give a term and then given the spiritual meaning. Also check out the Glossary in the back.

Science, error, substance

In establishing this Science, Mrs. Eddy gave us inspired terminology to help understand God. She states, “After the author’s sacred discovery, she affixed the name “Science” to Christianity, the name “error” to corporeal sense, and the name “substance” to Mind.” (S&H 483:13)

The following terms “mortal” and “immortal mind” are used throughout Mrs. Eddy writings and it is good to get grounded with these terms before going on. There are many more terms so do your research and look up the words in the Science and Health Concordance.

  1.      Mortal Mind

Read the following citation to get a clearer view of what Mrs. Eddy is talking about when it comes to thinking and mortal thought - Mortal Mind – “brainology”.

S&H 295:25 - 296:3

S&H 171:4.

  1.      Immortal MInd

S&H 273:16 -276:28

Thinking it through…

If you don’t understand something, think it through and have paper and pencil ready to record what you found. Write down your thoughts in a journal.

  1. 1.  Pay attention to what you are thinking.

  2. 2.  Pay attention to what you are putting into your thinking i.e. news, movies, music.

  3. 3.  Look up definitions of words you don’t understand.

4.   Reason or think out from God as image. That is you are thinking out from your

highest sense of God that is Principle, Love, Spirit, Soul, Mind, Truth, and Life.

Which is all good. God loves you. You are learning the spiritual sense of Love.

5.  Look up Bible words in a Bible Concordance

  1. 6.  Look up other words in The Complete Concordance to Science & Health with Key

to the Scripture to see what Mrs. Eddy says about the subject.

7.    Look words up in the Dictionary.

8.   Write in your books notes so you will understand the verse when you come back

to the verse. Buy a journal to keep your notes.

  1. 9.   Listen to God. God talks to you all the time but there things that get in the way

like the computer, TV, radio, CD’s, and phone texting.

10.  Have a quiet place where you can study.

  1. 11.  You are learning to see yourself the way God sees you. Mrs. Eddy says “You

must understand yourself to be immortal or your will not heal.”

12.  Get to know you books - Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary

Baker Eddy and The Bible - Kings James Bible

13.  Keep your Joy. If you are not joyful in your healing work then you are not

practicing Christian Science. Joy is the flag flying high when divine MInd is in

14.   Your life is your laboratory. Now go and heal.  Look for the blessings.

15.   Express gratitude in everything you do.

16.   Put LOVE into everything you do, think and say. “Be” every action Love.

As you pray, study and let God show you the way, you may have many different kinds of moments like:

1.Ah! Hah!

2.I agree with that!

3.I knew that but didn’t know I knew it.

  1. 4.Wow!

  2. 5.The book answered questions I didn’t know I had.

Did you know your thoughts are your children? You heal by disciplining your thoughts by keeping your thoughts on God. The word “discipline” comes from the word “disciple”. Jesus was teaching his Disciples “discipline”. You are learning to reason spiritually and this reasoning leads to revelation. Again, the dream of error must yield to reason and revelation. Reason and revelation do not yield to a dream or evil. Prayer leads to practical action.

Look these passages up in your books.

“You will learn that in Christian Science the first duty is to obey God, to have one Mind, and to love another as yourself.”  S&H 498:5

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul and with all thy mind.”  KJ Bible - Matthew 22:37

“We all must learn that life is God. Ask yourself:  Am I living the life that approaches the supreme good?”  S&H 496:9

Rules in Christian Science

Anyone who studies this Science is a student of Christian Science. There is only one Leader in Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. All students of Christian Science study the same books. God speaks to each of us in ways that we understand given our different backgrounds. God knows what we need each moment of the day. Christ Jesus points out in Luke 11: 9, 10 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. “

In reading through the Christian Science text book Science & Health you may want to keep a pencil handy to mark the rules. The rules are through out the writings of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to Scripture. They are not listed as list. You will need to glean these for yourself. The rules are some times used with the word “must”.  Keep your journal close or start a rules journal. This is not something you will rush through. Enjoy learning the rules and proving them in your everyday life.

Mrs. Eddy says this about God and his promise, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.” According to the Bible, God promises health, supply, peace of mind, courage, strength, and many other good things. Now a promise is something like a contract where both parties fulfill the terms of the agreement. Terms of the agreement would be the rules as Micah in the Bible says, “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly,  and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

Attributes of God

Seeing the Man and Woman of God’s creating means not looking for something wrong with a person but looking for the good. Goodness is your health. A gift of a lecture by Geith Plimmer talks about health as being goodness. You have the attributes of God. Some people look at God as having both good and evil attributes but that is mortal. If God is all in all and he is “always” good, how can he be evil? Note the word “always” means never changing or forever. So God is all good. God can’t be both. Start with the seven synonyms by looking up each in the dictionary so you getting a better understand of each. Then look each synonym up in the Thesaurus. The Thesaurus will give other words that mean the same thing. Your Life is your laboratory. Prove what you are reading by thinking about it, by pondering, and reaching an understanding. I did not understand all of Science and Health the first time. It took me a year to read Science and Health because I was working full time, taking pilots training in the morning, and ground school at night falling into bed reading only one or two pages of Science and Health at night. But God was directing my study. I would formulate questions during the day and God would answer at night through my reading. Download this sheet and write down the attributes of God as you read - Attributes of God.pdf

Cultivate Spiritual Understanding

Note that in the Bible God always met people where they were. Meaning farming terms were used like “cultivate” or “bear fruit”. Legal terms can be found in the Bible like “adversary” or “law”. Christ Jesus instruction came through the healings, parables and the “Be” - attitudes or Sermon on the Mount - Read S&H 271: 2-30 and in the Bible Matthew 5: 3-12. Note that the Lord’s Prayer is given here. Christ Jesus only gave one prayer and Mrs. Eddy gave her spiritual interpretation in S&H 16:24.  Apply the Lord’s pray to your every day life. Practice Love in your life. Let me be more specific. Since Love is a synonym for God, put God first in your life. For example, the first sentence of the Lord’s prayer says “Our Father”. What does that mean and how can I apply that today. “Our Father” not only means your Father and my Father but also as Mrs. Eddy explained “Our Father/Mother God, All Harmonious”. “Harmonious” is an attribute. Mrs. Eddy explains the Lord’s prayer as the “prayer of Soul”. So shouldn’t this first sentence take us back to our original goodness, our identification made in the image of God that is  the seven synonyms of God. Christ Jesus always went back to his origin to God in prayer no matter what the outward appearance. Jesus at no time went down to a diseased level of thinking, he always looked up and out from God, his origin.

To show you how Mrs. Eddy used the Bible in her writing take page S&H 174:17 . This citation begins with ”The thunder of Sinai and the Sermon on the Mount...” meaning “The thunder of Sinai” is where the Ten Commandments were given to Moses. “The Sermon on the Mount” is again from the book Matthew in the Bible. Again Mrs. Eddy takes you back to the origin in the Bible.

Be” every action Love.
